Why Would I Want to Change the Name of My Shopify Store?

While many people make a killing on Shopify selling products and services, many more will fail to get their idea off the ground. Instead, they think a name change and a few design tweaks might be enough to turn things around.

Maybe you want to change your store from a generalized target market to a laser-targeted market in a specific micro-niche? Maybe your store is doing so well that you want to change the name to a new catchy domain, and reflect that change in your Shopify store?

There are plenty of reasons for changing your Shopify store name, and it’s a simple and easy process that only takes a few minutes when you know what you’re doing.

Is It a Good Idea to Change the Name of Your Shopify Store?

In most cases, a name change to your Shopify store won’t make much of a difference. However, if you’re a large store with plenty of customers, you need to be careful about how you implement the change.

The last thing you want to do is spook your customers and have them go elsewhere because it looks like your store is behaving shady.

Make sure you send out a communication email to all of your customers before you make the change. People can adapt to change, but sudden and abrupt change may inspire panic and cause them to rush for the exits.

How Do I Change the Domain Name of My Shopify Store?

As you can see, changing the name of your Shopify store is easy. However, in some cases, you might want to change the domain name of your Shopify store as well. Changing the domain name adds a further sense of professionalism and trust to your store that increases conversion rates.

However, it’s important to note that you can’t change the .myshopify.com URL you use to log into the platform.

Add a customized domain name to your store, and set it as your primary domain, as shown in the instructions below. The original .myshopify.com URL will never appear to your store visitors, keeping your store looking congruent between its name and the URL.

If your .myshopify.com URL must match the name of your new store, then, unfortunately, you’ll need to create a new Shopify account. However, if that’s the case, then there are steps you can take to save all your work, so it makes the rebuild process a lot easier.

Here are the steps to take to change your domain name for your Shopify store.

Step 1 – Purchase a domain name

The chances are you already have your domain name set out and purchased, ready for action. If not, then do that step now. We recommend you buy a .com domain, but if you can’t find that domain name available, or someone’s charging a high price for it, then use another extension instead.

If you can’t find the domain name on any extension, sit around with friends and brainstorm some new ideas until you come up with a good fit for the new name.

Step 2 – Go to domains

Connecting your domain is easy. Visit your dashboard and connect your domain under the  sales channels tab > domains.

Step 3 – Connect the new domain

After selecting the above option, press the option to connect the existing domain, transfer a domain, or buy a new domain, based on your needs.

Buy a new domain – with this option, you can purchase your domain name directly from Shopify, without the need to visit an external domain registrar, such as Namecheap.

  • Transfer domain – with this option, you can choose the option to transfer your domain from Namecheap to Shopify.
  • Connect an existing domain – with this option; you can use the domain name you purchased on Namecheap. Connect it to your Shopify store and keep it there.

Step 4 – Check your work

Always double-check the new installation of your domain name change. If something goes wrong, it might take you days to notice the fault, costing you significant amounts of revenue.

Wrapping Up – Name Change or Not?

Changing the name of your site is one of the most common strategies internet marketers take when trying to revamp an idea that’s not working. If you find that your concept still doesn’t work with a name change and rebranding, maybe its time to look at another strategy.
