TLDR
- Joby Aviation shares surged 3.8% Monday following successful completion of New York City’s inaugural eVTOL air taxi demonstration flights
- The electric aircraft completed journeys from JFK Airport to Downtown Manhattan and Midtown landing sites in less than 10 minutes
- Demonstration flights operate under the federal eVTOL Integration Pilot Program launched via executive order
- Joby’s New York operations leverage its 2025 purchase of Blade Air Mobility’s passenger services division
- FAA certification remains in final phases, with the company recently completing its inaugural conforming aircraft flight for Type Inspection Authorization
Shares of Joby Aviation experienced a 3.8% uptick on Monday as the electric aviation company successfully concluded New York City’s inaugural electric vertical takeoff and landing air taxi demonstration program.
The electric aircraft launched from JFK International Airport and completed landings at multiple heliport facilities throughout the city, including the Downtown Skyport and both the West 30th Street and East 34th Street Heliports located in Midtown Manhattan.
Each flight between JFK and Manhattan required less than 10 minutes to complete. The identical journey using ground transportation regularly consumes between 60 and 120 minutes depending on traffic conditions.
This week-long demonstration campaign operates within the framework of the federal eVTOL Integration Pilot Program, a government initiative established through executive order designed to accelerate the commercial deployment of electric aerial transportation systems.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey collaborated directly with Joby and the FAA to execute these demonstration operations.
“The campaign offers the first real-world demonstration of how electric air taxis, which are quiet and produce zero operating emissions, will be able to connect the region,” Joby said in its announcement.
Joby’s foothold in New York stems from its 2025 acquisition of Blade Air Mobility’s passenger operations. Blade transported over 90,000 passengers throughout 2025 and maintains existing infrastructure across Manhattan sites and airports throughout the New York metropolitan area.
FAA Certification Progress
Joby continues advancing through the concluding phases of FAA certification requirements. The aviation company recently completed its inaugural conforming aircraft flight for Type Inspection Authorization, a critical milestone enabling FAA pilots to conduct for-credit evaluation flights.
The company’s commercial strategy incorporates partnerships with Delta Air Lines and Uber. The air taxi service specifically targets airport commuting routes, addressing traffic congestion that consumed approximately 102 hours per New York commuter in 2025.
From Bay Area to NYC
The New York demonstration flights build upon Joby’s Bay Area operations conducted earlier this year, which featured a flight crossing the Golden Gate Bridge as part of the company’s 2026 Electric Skies Tour.
The NYC demonstration campaign represents meaningful progress in Joby’s strategy to establish operations within one of the nation’s most challenging and congested transportation markets.
Joby’s conforming aircraft Type Inspection Authorization flight represented one of the latest significant achievements in the FAA certification pathway prior to launching the NYC demonstration program.
