India’s Union Minister for Electronics and IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw, revealed that the company is evaluating opportunities to invest in AI infrastructure while simultaneously exploring the manufacturing of servers and drones within Indian borders.
In a post on X, Vaishnaw announced: “Google is exploring investments in India across AI infrastructure and the manufacturing of servers and drones.” The company has not issued a public statement regarding these plans.
This development follows Google’s October 2025 pledge to deploy $15 billion across a five-year period for constructing a data center and AI hub facility in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. Google characterized this initiative as its most substantial financial commitment to India to date.
The official groundbreaking ceremony occurred on April 28, with Google working alongside partners AdaniConneX and Nxtra by Airtel. The company framed the project as a component of its “largest investment in India’s digital future to date.”

Inside the Visakhapatnam Development
The initiative centers on India’s first gigawatt-scale AI hub — a trio of data center facilities delivering a combined 1 GW hyperscale capacity. During the groundbreaking event, Vaishnaw envisioned Visakhapatnam’s transformation into an “AI Patnam” — essentially an AI City — powered by international investment and digital infrastructure development.
Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud, characterized the moment as “an inflexion point for the country’s AI-native future.”
Bikash Koley, Vice President of Google Cloud infrastructure, stated the hub would “play a critical role in India’s digital transformation and global AI economy.”
Jeet Adani, Director of the Adani Group, described the 1 GW installation as “a major milestone in India’s AI journey.”

The minister’s recent statements extend beyond data center development. Vaishnaw explicitly urged Google to establish manufacturing operations for servers, GPUs, and chips inside India — an appeal that corresponds with the nation’s comprehensive electronics manufacturing strategy.
