HP Inc. revealed HP IQ during its annual Imagine conference in New York City this Tuesday — a locally-processed AI solution engineered to enhance productivity for professionals working with documents and virtual meetings.
The technology manifests as an interactive text interface positioned at the screen’s upper edge. Users can query the system about their personal files — including PDFs, PowerPoint presentations, and various document formats — receiving comprehensive responses. The assistant also offers actionable recommendations.
Privacy stands as the central value proposition. HP IQ operates exclusively on local hardware, ensuring no processed information transmits to external cloud servers. This positioning targets enterprises managing confidential or proprietary materials.
“I believe the two most compelling applications are document interpretation and meeting summarization, all without cloud dependency,” stated Patrick Moorhead, founder and CEO of Moor Insights & Strategy. “For organizations with proprietary data or discussions requiring strict confidentiality, this capability carries significant value.”
HP IQ operates on a 20-billion-parameter AI model and will launch with the upcoming HP EliteBook X G2 PC lineup. Initial access begins Spring 2026, followed by a limited Summer 2026 deployment across select notebooks, desktops, and Poly Studio Video Bars. Widespread distribution is planned for the year’s second half.
The Imagine conference also showcased multiple commercial hardware releases — the EliteBook 6 G2q, EliteBook 8 G2 lineup, ProBook 4 G2, and EliteDesk 8 G2 collection. The premier EliteBook 6 G2q utilizes Snapdragon X2 Elite and X2 Plus chipsets, achieving up to 85 TOPS of NPU capability and battery longevity reaching 28 hours.
HP has established partnerships with more than 100 software companies to enable HP IQ’s localized AI functions, including collaborations with Rakuten, Goodnotes, and Guidde.
Will AI Innovation Drive HPQ Performance?
Industry experts remain measured in assessing whether this launch will translate into stock momentum. Tom Mainelli, Group Vice President of Device and Consumer Research at IDC, expressed approval of the strategic direction while withholding definitive predictions.
“The ultimate market reception of these innovations is yet to be determined,” Mainelli shared with Barron’s. “However, I appreciate HP’s willingness to explore unconventional approaches.”
The stock has experienced challenging market conditions. Compounding the price deterioration, HP has confronted profitability challenges from escalating memory component expenses and an unanticipated CEO transition in February. Tuesday’s product unveiling doesn’t immediately address either concern.
Spotlight Shifts to Apple
HP’s strategic initiatives are directing attention toward Apple, which announced Monday that its Worldwide Developers Conference reconvenes June 8 and will feature AI enhancements across Apple ecosystems.
Moorhead observed that HP’s advancement may intensify evaluation of Apple’s artificial intelligence strategy. Should HP IQ achieve meaningful user adoption, questions regarding Apple’s comparable on-device AI capabilities could intensify.
To date, Apple has successfully navigated AI-related competitive pressure, maintaining robust iPhone demand and expanding services revenue streams. Whether this protective advantage persists through June remains uncertain.
Apple’s WWDC is scheduled for June 8, 2026.
