Apple is preparing to monetize its Maps application through advertising, based on a Monday report from Bloomberg. The company may make an official announcement before month’s end.
The advertising framework will function similarly to Google’s existing Maps ad platform. Companies will compete for search keywords — for instance, a Japanese restaurant might bid on “sushi” — with the winning bidder’s business appearing prominently when users enter that search query.
The Maps advertising feature is anticipated to launch this summer. It will be available across Apple’s ecosystem, including iPhones, iPads, Macs, and web browsers.

This development aligns with Apple’s broader advertising strategy. The company has progressively expanded its advertising infrastructure. In late 2024, Apple introduced additional advertising inventory within App Store search and announced intentions to broaden its advertising ecosystem through 2026. Maps has been identified internally as a natural progression for advertising expansion.
Apple’s services division — encompassing the App Store, Apple Music, iCloud storage, and Apple TV+ — now produces over $100 billion in annual revenue. This represents more than one-quarter of the company’s overall revenue, a significant increase from less than 10% ten years ago.
European Regulatory Clearance
Apple received favorable regulatory news this month. The European Commission determined that Apple Maps would not be subject to the restrictive Digital Markets Act provisions, acknowledging the application’s comparatively modest market share in Europe versus competing services.
This decision removes a potential regulatory obstacle for launching a Maps advertising product without facing DMA-related challenges in one of Apple’s most important international markets.
