On Monday, March 16, Apple revealed the second iteration of its premium over-ear headphones, marking the first significant update since the AirPods Max debuted in December 2020.
The latest generation integrates Apple’s H2 processor, the same silicon that powers both the AirPods Pro and AirPods 4 models. This chip upgrade enables multiple capabilities that were impossible on the previous generation.
According to Apple, the refreshed headphones provide Active Noise Cancellation performance that’s up to 1.5 times stronger than the inaugural version. This enhancement results from the H2 chip’s processing power combined with advanced computational audio technology.
The enhanced ANC specifically addresses common environmental sounds including aircraft cabin noise and public transportation. Additionally, Transparency mode receives refinements for a more authentic listening experience.
Regarding sound reproduction, Apple integrated a new high dynamic range amplifier into the design. The manufacturer claims this component enhances audio clarity without deviating from the signature sonic character established by the first-generation AirPods Max.
A significant milestone for the Max series is the introduction of 24-bit, 48 kHz lossless audio support. Users can access this premium audio format through the bundled USB-C cable.
Exclusive Capabilities Now Available on AirPods Max
Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, Voice Isolation, and Live Translation make their Max debut with this release. These technologies have been exclusive to the second-generation AirPods Pro until now.
Live Translation harnesses Apple Intelligence to enable real-time cross-language communication. Voice Isolation leverages the H2 chip’s computational capabilities to eliminate background interference during phone conversations.
Conversation Awareness intelligently reduces media volume when it detects the user engaging in nearby dialogue. Adaptive Audio dynamically balances ANC and Transparency modes according to environmental conditions.
Content creators gain access to two specialized functions. Studio-quality audio capture caters to podcasters, journalists, and music professionals. The Camera remote function allows photographers to control iPhone or iPad camera operations via the Digital Crown.
Gaming enthusiasts will appreciate latency improvements when the headphones pair with Game Mode across iOS, macOS, or iPadOS devices.
Cost, Color Options, and Release Timeline
The AirPods Max 2 retail for $549 in the U.S. market. This matches the original model’s launch price, representing no change in the entry cost.
Five color variants are available: midnight, starlight, orange, purple, and blue.
Customers can place pre-orders beginning March 25 through Apple’s online storefront and the Apple Store application. Physical retail locations and shipments commence in early April.
Apple emphasized environmental considerations in the product’s development. The AirPods Max 2 incorporate 100% recycled rare earth elements throughout all magnetic components and 100% recycled polyester fabric in the cushioning.
New Apple Music members receive a complimentary three-month subscription with their AirPods Max 2 purchase.
