TLDR
- Micron has finalized the purchase of PSMC’s Tongluo P5 facility in Taiwan
- The company will construct an additional production plant at the Tongluo location
- The planned facility will match the size of its current Miaoli County operation
- Production will center on advanced DRAM and high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips
- Building work on the additional plant is scheduled to start before fiscal 2026 ends
Micron Technology ($MU) is strengthening its Taiwan presence. The American memory chip manufacturer announced Monday its intention to construct an additional production facility at the Tongluo location, recently purchased from Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp (PSMC).
The semiconductor company has finalized its purchase of PSMC’s Tongluo P5 facility in Miaoli County. This acquisition provides Micron with a strategic position it intends to strengthen through the construction of a second plant matching the current facility’s dimensions.
The additional facility targets increased production capacity for cutting-edge DRAM and high-bandwidth memory (HBM) โ essential components that drive AI accelerators and data center processors.
Building operations are planned to commence before the conclusion of fiscal 2026, which for Micron extends through late August.
Scaling Up HBM Manufacturing
HBM has emerged as a critical product within the semiconductor sector. These memory chips are integral to products from Nvidia and competing AI hardware manufacturers, with availability remaining constrained.
Micron ranks as the third leading manufacturer in the HBM market, trailing SK Hynix and Samsung. The Taiwan fab expansion represents a strategic initiative to narrow this competitive distance.
The Tongluo site establishes Micron’s second Taiwan production hub, complementing its current Taichung operations.
Operating dual facilities at a single location delivers infrastructure cost advantages and accelerates production scaling, as utilities, supply chains, and engineering support systems are already established.
Strategic Value of the Tongluo Acquisition
The PSMC deal was initially revealed last year and has now reached completion. PSMC operated as a foundry manufacturer, and its Tongluo P5 location provides operational space that Micron will adapt for its proprietary DRAM manufacturing processes.
Micron has kept the financial details of the finalized acquisition confidential.
The planned second facility at Tongluo will equal the first in size, although Micron hasn’t released specific capacity metrics for either structure currently.
Taiwan hosts a substantial share of global advanced semiconductor production, and Micron’s regional expansion positions the company nearer to essential partners within the area’s chip manufacturing network.
MU stock was up 5.13% at the time of reporting.
