Visa (V) has introduced Intelligent Commerce Connect, an innovative platform engineered to enable AI-powered agents to independently browse and purchase products on behalf of users.
The payment processing giant revealed the initiative on Wednesday, positioning the platform as a network-agnostic, protocol-flexible solution equipped with token vault capabilities for AI developers and retail businesses.
The infrastructure empowers AI agents to explore merchant catalogs, make product selections, and finalize transactions entirely without requiring human intervention during the payment process.
Retailers participating in the platform gain visibility for their product offerings within AI ecosystems. This enables an AI agent operating on a consumer’s behalf to locate and procure items from these retailers automatically.
The platform manages critical functions including tokenization, expenditure limitations, identity verification, and PCI compliance standards. Retailers aren’t required to rebuild their infrastructure, as the entire system operates through a unified integration point via the Visa Acceptance Platform.
Intelligent Commerce Connect accepts both Visa-issued cards and those from competing payment networks. The platform also maintains compatibility with prominent AI agent protocols currently deployed in the market.
Managing Expenditure Limits
Consumers can register their Visa card credentials and establish spending parameters that govern AI agent transactions. The AI agent subsequently functions autonomously within these predetermined boundaries.
This architecture ensures consumers maintain financial oversight while permitting AI systems to execute purchases independently. Retailers receive funds through their established payment processors without additional integration requirements.
The platform is presently operational in a limited pilot program involving select partners. Visa has scheduled a comprehensive launch for the second half of 2026.
This represents another step in Visa’s exploration of AI-enabled payment solutions. Earlier this year in March, the financial services company introduced Visa CLI, an experimental offering that enabled AI agents to execute same-day payment transfers.
Nevermined Partnership and x402 Integration
Nevermined, an AI-focused financial technology firm, has completed its integration with Intelligent Commerce Connect. The company achieved this connection through implementation of Coinbase’s x402 protocol.
The x402 protocol provides AI agents with a uniform methodology for initiating payment requests from merchants through programmatic interfaces. Erik Reppel, who developed x402, explained that the protocol functions in conjunction with protected card systems to facilitate genuine commercial exchanges between AI agents and retail businesses.
According to data published on the protocol’s official website, x402 has handled $24 million in total transaction value during the previous 30-day period.
Blockchain platforms such as Ethereum, Tron, and Solana have simultaneously developed infrastructure to accommodate AI agent transactions in online commerce. Visa’s platform entry positions the company as a direct competitor to these decentralized initiatives.
The comprehensive deployment of Intelligent Commerce Connect remains on track for late 2026, with additional partnership announcements expected throughout the pilot testing phase.
