OpenAI has announced plans to consolidate its ChatGPT platform, Codex programming assistant, and web browser into a unified desktop application. The company describes this initiative as creating a “superapp” designed to streamline its offerings and enhance user accessibility.
The company officially acknowledged the strategic pivot on Thursday after initial coverage appeared in the Wall Street Journal. This represents a significant directional change for the artificial intelligence leader.
Fidji Simo, serving as Chief of Applications, will spearhead sales initiatives for the consolidated platform. Meanwhile, President Greg Brockman will temporarily shift from his computing oversight role to guide the product restructuring and associated organizational adjustments.
According to an internal communication obtained by reporters, Simo informed staff: “We realized we were spreading our efforts across too many apps and stacks, and that we need to simplify our efforts.” She emphasized that the scattered approach had created operational bottlenecks.
Throughout the previous year, OpenAI introduced numerous separate applications, with several receiving backing from Microsoft. Many of these initiatives failed to achieve meaningful user adoption and created organizational uncertainty regarding strategic priorities.
The consolidated platform will emphasize “agentic AI” capabilities. This refers to artificial intelligence systems capable of operating autonomously on desktop environments, executing functions such as code generation or data manipulation with minimal human oversight.
In contrast to conventional conversational AI, agentic systems function more like independent digital workers. They assume responsibility for assignments and pursue objectives with minimal supervision.
The Enterprise Showdown: OpenAI vs. Anthropic
OpenAI and Anthropic have entered into intense competition for corporate clients. Both organizations are marketing AI-powered productivity solutions to the business sector.
Initially, OpenAI didn’t emphasize enterprise sales as a priority. However, the company reversed this approach after observing Anthropic‘s achievements with offerings such as Claude Code and Cowork.
Anthropic has established significant market presence within the enterprise segment. OpenAI is now mounting an aggressive campaign to narrow this competitive advantage.
Additionally, both organizations are reportedly considering public market debuts before year-end. Each has committed to substantial revenue targets with their investors.
