On Thursday, OpenAI revealed plans to acquire Astral, a well-regarded startup specializing in open source development tools for Python programmers.
The Astral team will become part of OpenAI’s organization, focusing specifically on enhancing Codex, the company’s artificial intelligence-powered coding platform. Neither party disclosed the acquisition price.
Astral has earned significant recognition within the Python development ecosystem. The startup’s products are designed to enhance both performance and dependability in Python programming workflows.
In a blog post, Charlie Marsh, who founded and leads Astral, emphasized that the company’s mission remains unchanged following the transaction. “To make programming more productive. To build tools that radically change what it feels like to build software,” Marsh explained.
Marsh provided assurance that Astral’s suite of open source development tools will remain actively maintained once the acquisition completes.
OpenAI introduced the Codex platform last year and unveiled a standalone desktop application earlier in 2026. According to the company, Codex currently boasts more than 2 million users on a weekly basis.
This figure marks a tripling of the user count since January’s beginning. Overall platform engagement has experienced a fivefold expansion during that same timeframe.
Battle Intensifies with Anthropic and Cursor in Developer Tools Space
The market for AI-assisted coding solutions has experienced rapid expansion throughout the past twelve months. OpenAI faces direct competition from Anthropic, whose Claude Code platform has captured substantial interest among the developer community.
Cursor represents another significant competitor that has cultivated a dedicated user base within software engineering circles. OpenAI aims to expand Codex’s market presence and narrow the competitive distance.
The Astral transaction remains contingent upon standard completion requirements, including clearance from regulatory authorities.
This acquisition forms part of OpenAI’s broader strategic expansion through mergers and acquisitions. The organization brought on Albert Lee from Google in December to oversee corporate development initiatives.
OpenAI’s Acquisition Momentum Continues
OpenAI completed a $6.4 billion purchase of io, Jony Ive’s AI hardware venture, in May 2025. More recently this month, the company announced its intention to acquire cybersecurity firm Promptfoo.
In January, OpenAI purchased Torch, a healthcare technology company. The Astral transaction extends this increasingly active acquisition strategy.
With backing from Microsoft, OpenAI has been broadening its reach across numerous product categories while navigating intensifying competition throughout the artificial intelligence sector.
