Meta Platforms introduced two prescription-ready Ray-Ban smart glasses models on Tuesday, carrying a starting price of $499. This launch strengthens Meta’s position in a wearables sector where it already maintains commanding market share.
The newly announced models — the Ray-Ban Meta Blayzer Optics and Ray-Ban Meta Scriber Optics — are currently open for pre-orders through Meta’s official site and Ray-Ban’s online store. Physical optical retail locations across the United States and selected global markets will stock them beginning April 14.
These latest smart glasses accommodate nearly every prescription specification, featuring overextension hinge mechanisms, swappable nose pad options, and temple tips that opticians can customize for individual fits.
Mark Zuckerberg, Meta’s CEO, has emphasized that prescription eyewear serves billions globally — making this capability a natural evolution for the product category.
Meta simultaneously broadened its color palette and lens selections for the Oakley Meta Vanguard and HSTN collections. Additionally, three exclusive seasonal colorways are launching for the Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 series.
The social media giant plans to introduce Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta eyewear to additional international territories over the next several months, targeting Japan, Korea, Singapore, Chile, Colombia, and Peru.
Regarding software enhancements, Meta incorporated a nutrition analysis tool into the glasses. Voice-controlled WhatsApp digest and recall functions are entering early testing phases, while simultaneous translation now supports 20 different languages.
Display Version Receives Functionality Upgrades
Meta’s Ray-Ban Display glasses — which debuted at $799 in the previous year — are receiving significant feature additions. New capabilities encompass browsing Instagram Reels, quick-access Spotify controls, at-a-glance widget information, and simultaneous recording of both the display interface and the wearer’s perspective.
Neural handwriting functionality is anticipated to become available within the next few weeks.
The Display variant can be configured with prescription lenses for an extra $200 charge, although Meta postponed their worldwide distribution earlier this year citing inventory constraints and unexpectedly high consumer interest.
Rival Companies Advancing Their Offerings
Meta controls 76.1% of worldwide smart glasses deliveries, based on IDC research. The sector delivered 9.6 million devices throughout last year and analysts predict volumes will climb to 13.4 million by 2026.
Snap has established a dedicated subsidiary focused on its augmented reality eyewear and is gearing up for a consumer product introduction. Google has forged a collaboration with Warby Parker to develop its own AI-powered glasses offering.
Meta creates its Ray-Ban smart glasses through a strategic alliance with EssilorLuxottica, Ray-Ban’s corporate parent. The technology company has committed to allocating hundreds of billions of dollars toward its “personal superintelligence” initiative.
META shares advanced nearly 4% during Tuesday’s morning trading session but continue to trail approximately 19% for the current year.
