Bavarian automaker BMW pulled back the curtain on its all-electric i3 sedan Wednesday, representing the second vehicle to utilize its revolutionary Neue Klasse architecture.

This introduction represents a clear challenge to Tesla’s Model 3 range, with BMW making no effort to disguise its competitive intentions.
The electric sedan debuts exclusively as the 50 xDrive model — featuring dual electric motors driving all four wheels and delivering 469 horsepower. While Tesla‘s Model 3 Performance edges ahead with 510 horsepower, BMW counters with a different competitive advantage.
The Munich-based manufacturer projects 900 kilometers of range under European WLTP testing protocols, which converts to approximately 440 miles using EPA methodology. This figure substantially exceeds Tesla Model 3 Performance’s 309-mile EPA rating and even surpasses the Model 3 Premium’s 363-mile capacity.
Rapid charging capabilities allow the i3 to recover roughly 250 miles of range within a 10-minute charging session, enabled by 800-volt electrical architecture and sixth-generation eDrive powertrain technology. Acceleration from standstill to 60 mph is targeted at approximately four seconds.
Cabin Design and Tech Features
BMW has reimagined the interior space around a sweeping 40-inch panoramic screen spanning the entire dashboard width. The refreshed iDrive interface operates on BMW’s latest Heart of Joy computing architecture, delivering performance speeds 10 times faster than previous iterations.
Physically, the new i3 surpasses the current 3 Series dimensions — gaining length, width, and height — while its exterior styling provides a preview of the forthcoming gasoline-powered 3 Series design language.
Official US pricing remains unannounced, though industry expectations place the i3 around $55,000. This positions it above the Model 3 Premium AWD’s approximate $47,490 starting price, while matching the Model 3 Performance at $54,990.
Manufacturing Schedule and American Availability
Production commences at BMW’s Munich manufacturing facility in August 2026. While European customers can expect deliveries beginning fall 2026, American buyers face a longer wait — US market availability isn’t anticipated until 2027.
The automaker has confirmed plans for additional powertrain variants, including a high-performance all-electric M3 version. Both the i3 sedan and iX3 SUV represent initial entries in an expansive Neue Klasse strategy encompassing four additional forthcoming models.
BMW has characterized the Neue Klasse initiative as the most substantial capital investment in the company’s entire history.
According to Wall Street analysis, BAMXF stock currently carries a Hold consensus rating, derived from five Buy recommendations, five Hold ratings, and three Sell opinions across the past three months.
